The pair - who are reportedly cousins - made their way through the unlocked gate at Pennington Elementary School in Mount Vernon last week after school hours, leaving the grounds without permission before they were spotted by a nearby proprietor who spotted the kids walking on Gramatan Avenue.

According to multiple reports, the kindergarteners left through an unlocked gate near the playground, in a section of the campus that is currently under construction.

After being spotted by the concerned business owner, police and school officials were notified, and the students were taken back to the school without further incident.

The incident is under investigation and the school is evaluating its safety protocols to ensure a similar situation doesn’t happen again, a school spokesperson stated.
