The contest called upon students to write a poem espousing the theme: Hallowed Grounds: Sites of the Civil Rights Movement.

The winners are:

  • Kayla Casanova, 11th grade, Roosevelt High School.
  • Mantasha Khan, 7th grade, Yonkers Middle High School.
  • Angelica Lopez-Tucker, 5th grade, Pearls Hawthorne School.

The winning poems are posted on the city's website and will be read aloud by the students Feb. 18 at the City of Yonkers Black History Month Celebration in the City Hall ceremonial courtroom (4th floor) from 6 to 7 p.m.
