Mayor Mike Spano announced a voluntary evacuation of residences along the Yonkers waterfront, including the Scrimshaw House, which is lined with sandbags.

The mayor’s office issued the order shortly before 5 p.m., recommending residents of 1,300 units along the waterfront to find shelter. The storm surge is expected to reach five feet in some places.

Spano asked residents of the Scrimshaw House, 23 Water Grant St., and the three buildings of Hudson Park, 1 Alexander St., I Pier Pointe and 1 Van Der Donck St., to leave their residences by 9 p.m.

The first floors of these buildings may experience flooding and power outages.

“We urge residents to stay with friends or relatives if possible until threats of the storm surge have subsided. Otherwise, the city has places for you to go and be safe,” Spano said in a statement. “Please err on the side of caution, use your common sense and leave your residence as quickly and safely as possible.”

Emergency crews will be available to assist with the evacuation, Spano said. Waterfront residents can find shelter at Lincoln High School, 375 Kneeland Ave., and the Police Athletic League, 127 N. Broadway.

Additionally, Spano said Yonkers Public Schools will be closed Tuesday.
