Services Announced For Yonkers Detective Killed In Accident

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Funeral services will be held for the Yonkers police detective who was killed when his SUV collided Sunday, Feb. 14, with a firetruck.

Visitation for Frank Fernandez, 45, will be held from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 17, and from 2 p.m. to 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 18, at the Whalen and Ball Funeral Home, 168 Park Ave., Yonkers.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday, Feb. 19, at Monastery Church of the Sacred Heart, 110 Shonnard Place, Yonkers.

Burial will take place at Mount Hope Cemetery in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Fernandez, who was married with two children, had been with the Police Department for 15 years. He was a “well-respected member” whose “passing is a major loss to the YPD family,” Police Commissioner Charles Gardner said in a previous report in the Daily Voice.

Four firefighters who were on the truck were slightly injured in the crash, which is still under investigation.
