Fred Buonocore, who works at the Equity Group in New York City, ran to catch his train Tuesday afternoon and ended up in a middle car of the Harlem Line train, according to the story.
That train collided with an SUV at a crossing in Valhalla, N.Y., killing the driver of the car and five people in the front car of the train.
Buonocore tore open the doors to his train car, cutting his hands, and jumped into the snow to safety and then helped others get off the train, he told NBC Connecticut.
He said he probably knew the victims -- not by name, but by face -- because he sat every day in that front car -- the quiet car.
One of the victims -- Aditya Tomar, 41 -- lived in neighboring Danbury. He worked at JP Morgan Asset Management in New York City.
