Parkway Road Bridge To Possibly Open By September In Yonkers

EASTCHESTER, N.Y. – After countless delays, and a complete stoppage of construction earlier this year, work has resumed at the Parkway Road Bridge site in Bronxville, and a completion date may finally be in sight after more than two years.

The Parkway Road Bridge, which connects Bronxville and Yonkers, has been closed for more than two years.

The Parkway Road Bridge, which connects Bronxville and Yonkers, has been closed to traffic since June 2013, when members of the state Department of Transportation forced village officials to close it after it was deemed a hazard during a routine inspection.

The bridge originally was scheduled to be opened as early as April of this year, but village officials were forced to reject the only two bids they received from contractors because they were too costly, stalling the project.

Earlier this year, the village enlisted a Manhattan-based contracting company to determine the scope of the project, which originally was valued at approximately $200,000, which would be divided between Eastchester, Bronxville and the Yonkers. However, the initial bids that were sent in each were for at least $500,000, with one nearing $1 million.

Contractors resumed work last month after accepting a bid from the Arben Group developers following a second round of bidding. Steelwork has been underway on the underside of the bridge, and according to Bronxville Mayor Mary Marvin, it may be opened to the public as soon as September.

“In positive funding news, the Parkway Road Bridge repairs are underway and set to be completed by September,” she said. “This is thanks to contributions from the city of Yonkers and the town of Eastchester, as well as state aid secured by (Scarsdale) Assemblywoman Amy Paulin.

“We know the repairs clearly took longer than anyone anticipated, but in the long view, the joint funding and attendant responsibilities proided the most prudent path to proceed to protect everyone’s best interests going forward>”
