WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. – A massive winter storm that was barely on the local radar – literally – 24 hours before it struck brought Westchester County to a standstill on Tuesday.

The coastal storm resulted in early school dismissals, treacherous travel and Gov. Andrew Cuomo declaring a State of Emergency. Several school districts announced delayed openings for Wednesday on Tuesday evening, leaving open the possibility of closings depending on conditions.

Final snow accumulation totals are expected to range from 4 to 12 inches with lesser amounts further north and higher amounts near the coast.

Mamaroneck reported receiving 12.5 inches of snow accumulation at 10:50 p.m. Tuesday. At 7:40 p.m., on Tuesday, 12 inches of accumulation was reported in Scarsdale, compared to 5 inches in Mount Kisco. Yonkers reported 9 inches of accumulation at 8 p.m. on Tuesday.

A Winter Storm Warning issued by the National Weather Service, which was set to expire at 6 a.m. Wednesday, has been extended until 9 a.m. A Wind-Chill Advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday.

After a mostly cloudy start, Wednesday is expected to become sunny, with a high only between 14 and 16 degrees and wind chills as lows as 13 below.

Temperatures are expected to remain below freezing for the next week. The next chance of snow is on Saturday, with a 50-percent chance at this point, according to the National Weather Service.

MECIII:

As a long time resident of Tarrytown that now lives in Colorado, I am surprised they call six inches of snow a storm. Back in the sixties , we would get 20 to 30 inches at a time. I hope all you tarrytowners love living there , I did .
