The annual event funds support for patients and research to find a cure for all blood cancers. Last year it raised $887,000 in Westchester and the Hudson Valley, and $50 million nationally.
The Light the Night Walk, originally scheduled for Nov. 3 at Playland Amusement Park in Rye, had to be rescheduled after Hurricane Sandy damaged the site.
"Light the Night is our largest fundraising event of the year, and we did not want to let down the thousands of participants, many of whom are patients themselves, who were looking forward to it," said Dennis Chillemi, executive director of the Westchester/Hudson Valley Chapter of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
The chapter, based in White Plains, honors at least one local blood cancer survivor at the event. This year's honored patients are Sabrina Marciante, a South Salem resident with acute lymphoblastic leukemia, and Court Ingraham, a Mahopac resident who survived non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Participants do a lap for these survivors, as well as for a blood cancer patient who has died. This year's in-memory patient is Joseph Lorenz, an Ossining resident who lost his battle to non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in 2011.
