Colon, a Hartford, Conn., resident known for his acoustic soul style, told Daily Voice before taking the stage that he had never been to The Capitol Theatre in Port Chester but liked its acoustics and 87-year history.
“There are so many people that have played here, so I look forward to trying to come back,” he said of the venue best-known for having the Grateful Dead play 18 times from 1970-71.
Many attending the benefit concert did so to support White Plains Hospital, as well as to squeeze in a weekday date night – even Colon’s wife attended for their own date night.
“We also wanted to have some time away from the kids and enjoy ourselves, and support the hospital at the same time,” said Nora Anaya, who attended the concert with her husband, Samuel.

Scarsdale’s Nancy Clarvit is the daughter of Joan and Alan Herfort, M.D., for whom the hospital named its catheterization lab. The concert Wednesday supported the funding effort for the expansion of the lab, which opened in 2008 and is one of two in Westchester authorized to perform emergency and elective angioplasty.
In 2013, nearly 1,300 emergency and elective cardiac catheterizations were performed at the lab.
“White Plains hospitals is very important to all of us in the family,” said Clarvit, who was born at White Plains Hospital, as well as her children. “This is a great event and they’re going to be raising money for a second cardiac cath lab.”
The second lab will be in the same location as the existing lab.
Marsalis is a three-time Grammy Award-winning saxophonist and Tony Award-nominated composer. At The Capitol Theatre on Wednesday, Marsalis performed with pianist Joey Calderazzo. He joked that Calderazzo wrote all of the songs on the spot, so he would wait a few bars into a song to jump in.
White Plains Hospital will host its first Drive for a Cure golf outing and dinner Sept. 16 at Pelham Country Club at 940 Wynnewood Road, Pelham Manor. To buy tickets, visit the hospital website.
