According to Frank Brodhead, coordinator for Concerned Families of Westchester, the event will feature “the words of refugees, immigration lawyers, politicians” and “some ordinary folks.”
Greenburgh Supervisor Paul Feiner has been invited, but it was not known Wednesday if he planned to attend.
The group has members in Hastings-on-Hudson, Dobbs Ferry, Irvington and Yonkers.
The rally commences at noon at the VFW Plaza at the intersection of Warburton and Spring streets.
CFOW got its start after 9/11 as an anti-war organization. It later took on the issue of climate change and is now part of the “resistance to the Trump agenda,” Brodhead said Wednesday.
According to The New York Times, the newly minted leader of the free world signed an executive order Wednesday to start building a massive wall along the country’s border with Mexico. He also announced that he plans to halt the immigration of all refugees temporarily, and Syrian refugees, indefinitely, the New York Times reported..
Millions of Syrians have fled their country since the inception of a civil war there in 2011.
CFOW sees itself a little differently that larger public policy groups such as MoveOn.org and Indivisible, Brodhead said.
While MoveOn.org focuses on lobbying elected officials, CFOW is more concerned with, Brodhead said, “education through action.”
In other words, it uses knowledge to spur social movements, he added.
CFOW says it has hosted forums on such diverse topics such as Afghanistan, Islam, civil liberties, health care reform and property taxes.
It has also supported actions by other groups such as WESPAC and SAPE (Stop the Algonquin Pipeline). The pipeline carries natural gas through Westchester to points north.
CFOW plans to hold another gathering in early February “with speakers on whatever atrocities Trump cooks up in the next week or so, along with breakout groups to plan some action,” Brodhead said.
