Gas Shortage Creates Tension, Frustration In Yonkers

YONKERS N.Y. – Motorists are waiting in lines stretching five blocks, residents are standing in lines more than 20 feet long, police are directing traffic, gas attendants are running from car to car and and everyone is waiting for Yonkers to get more gas.

To deal with the current gas shortage in Yonkers, Mayor Mike Spano signed an executive order Thursday limiting motorists to 10 gallons of gas per visit.

"At this point, I believe that most people are staying close to home and avoiding traveling," said Spano. "If we were told that gas would be available next week, then we would remove the ration. But we would then continue to monitor the gas situation to see if these long lines remain."

The lines at gas stations still flush with fuel have kept some motorists waiting for up to an hour. And, with the long lines, commuters have grown increasingly more ill-tempered, said John Albano, manager of the Mobil station on Yonkers Avenue.

The Mobil station received a shipment early this morning, but Albano told police he wouldn't open without their presence.

"People are calling me up asking if I have gas. 'Yeah,' I tell them." said Albano. "Then they ask me if there is long line, and I'm like, 'Are you serious?' This shortage we are experiencing right now is crazy because you really can't predict when you're going to get another shipment."

Nick Drent was one of the many Yonkers residents waiting to fill up his car.

"Man, I've been out here forever and I've gone down to empty just waiting," said Drent. "I'm not even sure why this whole shortage is even occurring. I'm a worker who has to drive a lot and this isn't working for me. Yonkers better get a few more gas shipments asap."
