Gas Lines Long, Tempers Short In Yonkers

YONKERS, N.Y. – Long lines and short tempers were the norm in Yonkers Thursday as drivers scrambled to find fuel in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy.

Throughout the city gas was at a premium with a number of stations shut down either because of depleted fuel supplies or a lack of power.

Two Yonkers Avenue stations had dozens of cars lined down the block as motorists waited anxiously to gas up.

Shawna Baker said she visited six closed stations before hearing from a friend that the Mobil near Midland Avenue was open.

“I am so grateful to get some gas,” the Bronx woman said. “I started getting really nervous.”

Baker said what she thought would be a quick trip to fill up her car turned into an hours-long excursion.

“I didn’t realize it was this bad,” she said. “I was in for a rude awakening.”

Yonkers resident Katarina Kandracove said she encountered similar problems, driving around for two hours before she found the Mobil station.

“I got lucky,” she said. “It’s really hard to find gas anywhere right now.”

Down the road, at the BP station near Alida Street, horns blared as dozens of cars waiting to fuel up spilled onto Yonkers Avenue.

But drivers weren’t the only ones fed up with the gas shortage. The mess was creating a headache for station owners who had to deal with crowded parking lots and short-tempered motorists.

“I don’t want to see this,” said Mobil station owner John Albano. “This is terrible.”

As for how much longer the Yonkers Avenue station would have fuel, Albano said at the rate they were going, they may be pumped dry by Thursday afternoon.

“Once we’re out, we’re out,” he said. “That’s it.”
