Flooding Causes Parkway Closures In Southern Westchester

The heavy rain moving through the area has resulted in the closures of stretches of three parkways and a roadway in the area Friday.

A Flash Flood Warning issued for southern portions of the Hudson Valley has been extended to 5 p.m. Friday and now includes all of Westchester County as well as Putnam.

The warning, issued by the National Weather Service, went into effect at 12:30 p.m.

The Taconic State Parkway is closed southbound in Mount Pleasant between Stevens Avenue and Lakeview Avenue. The closure was reported at 3 p.m.

The Hutchinson River Parkway is closed southbound at the Cross County Parkway (Exit 15) and East Lincoln Avenue (Exit 12). The closure occurred around 1:15 p.m.

The Bronx River Parkway is closed between the Sprain Brook Pkwy and Westchester County Center

The BRP is also closed northbound between the Sprain Brook Parkway and Paxton Avenue/Palmer Road. It closed just before 2 p.m. 

Farther north, there has been a report of a vehicle in the water on the Bronx River Parkway in White Plains near Hamilton Avenue.

In Rockland, heavy flooding is being reported in West Nyack in the area of Routes 303 and 59.

Northbound Route 303 is closed at Bradley Parkway in Blauvelt and in both directions at Mountainview Avenue in Orangeburg. Both situations are due to flooding.

Doppler radar indicated thunderstorms producing heavy rain across the warned area. Up to one inch of rain has already fallen.

An additional 1 to 2 inches of rain is expected.

Excessive runoff from heavy rainfall will cause flooding of small creeks and streams, urban areas, highways, streets and underpasses as well as other drainage areas and low lying spots.

* Some locations that will experience flooding include Yonkers, New Rochelle and White Plains, according to the National Weather Service.

Steady rain started in the late morning and will remain heavy through late Friday afternoon accompanied by gusty winds. Thunderstorms are possible, with some of the storms producing more heavy rainfall.

Rain will continue Friday night, with more thunderstorms possible before midnight, followed by more rain between midnight and 3 a.m. Saturday and showers after 3 a.m.

The rest of the day Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a high temperature will be in the low 60s.

There is a 30 percent chance of showers on Sunday, otherwise it will be partly sunny with a high near 60. Sunday night will be mostly cloudy and colder, with a low around 40.

The colder air will continue as the workweek starts Monday, with the high struggling to climb out of the low 50s under partly cloudy skies.
