More than 40 firefighters responded to the historic W.T. Grant building at the corner of Palisade Avenue and New Main Street, and were able to douse the flames within 40 minutes, said Lohud.com.

The building's owner noticed smoke when he was opening the store about 7 a.m. and called 911. By the time firefighters arrived they were greeted by heavy smoke on the second floor which had been boarded up, limiting visibility. Using thermal imaging cameras, firefighters were able to locate the fire under an air conditioner on the second floor, added Lohud.com.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation. The store's owner hoped to open later Tuesday, said Lohud.com.
