YONKERS, N.Y. – Empire City Casino is helping a Catholic organization provide needed services to families affected by Hurricane Sandy.

The Yonkers Avenue casino has donated $500,000 to Catholic Charities’ Relief and Recovery Fund, hoping to help families still reeling from the storm. The money will be directed to New Yorkers recovering in New York City, as well as Westchester, the casino said.

“We are grateful for Empire City Casino's generosity,” Monsignor Kevin Sullivan, executive director of Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of New York, said in a statement.  “This donation has enabled Catholic Charities to respond early, but will also help our commitment to assist in meeting long-term needs.”

Since the storm hit the New York area in late October, Catholic Charities has responded to needy families by deploying food pantries to hard-hit neighborhoods, delivering crucial supplies and coordinating volunteers for clean-up efforts.

Empire City Casino has also provided direct assistance to residents after the storm. The casino sent chefs to coastal areas to prepare hot meals for thousands of first responders and residents. The casino also served as a hub for Con Edison to distribute dry ice and blankets to residents in need.

Timothy Rooney, Empire City president and chief executive officer, also announced last month he planned to match up to $100,000 of employee and customer contributions to the Empire State Relief Fund for Hurricane Sandy victims.

“There are no greater deeds than charity and service,” said Rooney. “The devastation New Yorkers suffered from this storm is unspeakable and they need our help. Whether you donate $2 or $2,000, it will make a difference.  No act of kindness or generosity is ever too small.”
