YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers police found as many as 30 dead cats in plastic bags hanging from tree branches in a wooded area off Overlook Terrace Thursday morning, police officials said.
Police and the SPCA responded to a tip at 10:50 a.m. in the area of 14 Overlook Terrace and subsequently located the cats in close proximity to several residential buildings.
According to Lieutenant Patrick McCormack, the cats were in different stages of decomposition, and it is possible they had been put in the bags at different times.
McCormack said there is no overt evidence of criminal activity thus far. The cause of death for the cats will be determined via necropsies.
"Some of the cats are in very advanced stages of composition, so we need to wait for test results," he said.
McCormack said there was no evidence of any kind of ritualistic behavior associated with the cats.
He added that no suspects have been taken into custody, but police and SPCA officials are currently interviewing nearby residents for possible information.
Additionally, the area is relatively hidden from view down the dead end street, and some of the bags could have been there for an extended period of time.
This is not the first incident of dead cats found in Yonkers in recent memory. In May 2013, a $1,000 reward was offered by the Animal Defenders Of Westchester for information on a suspected cat killer in northeast Yonkers.
Anyone with information about the cats is asked to call the detectives' division at 914-377-7724.
