On Tuesday, city officials unanimously agreed that after an informal bidding process, Capital Industries Corp. should be in charge of the project after submitting a $104,500 offer sheet to take down the historic club and clock tower.
In an effort to expedite the process of demolishing the Rowing Club, the City Council only hosted an informal bid, offering the job to just three contractors and not opening it publicly. Capital Industries is now tasked with the removal of the club structure, the disassembly and transport of the cupola and clock tower.
The building, which has stood for more than a century overlooking the Long Island Sound, has been in a state of disrepair for several years, since Hurricane Sandy devastated the East Coast. It was deemed historic just seven years ago, but such a distinction does not preclude demolition if the building is deemed a “hazard.”
According to the resolution announcing the selection of Capital Industries, members of the council noted that “together with Corporation Counsel, the Bureau of Buildings has taken all the necessary steps in order to secure the perimeter of the property to begin the process to prepare for the removal of the structure.”
