After collecting donations from Junior League members and the community over the past few months, 26 students in Yonkers have been outfitted with all the college essentials that they need to kickstart their post-graduation careers.

Items collected and distributed included blankets, bedding, towels, stationary and toiletries that were collected from the Bed, Bath and Beyond and Target college registries.

According to league member Rosalia Nocerino, this is the fourth year the organizations have teamed up to help send students to college that have been deemed “at-risk.” Many of the students are the first in their family to go to college, and some are the first simply to graduate high school.

Each of the students are a part of the YPIE’s college preparatory program, which provides participants with the tools and tutoring necessary to embark on their college careers.

“The young women, many of whom are the first to attend college in their families, were all very happy and expressed genuine gratitude,” Junior League President Sheridan Denfeld said. “As a women’s organization, the JLB is thrilled to support these remarkable young women as they begin the next chapter in their lives.”
