YONKERS, N.Y. -- Derrick Kuffour, a local student from Yonkers, was selected to serve as a school ambassador for Fuel Up to Play 60, the premier in-school nutrition and physical activity program in the United States, according to a press release.
Inspired and led by youth, Fuel Up to Play 60 empowers students to eat healthy, be active and make positive changes in their schools and communities, according to a press release. The program -- created in partnership with the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council and the NFL, in cooperation with USDA -– is in more than 73,000 schools nationwide, according to a press release.
“The Student Ambassador Summit is an exciting leadership opportunity for students like these who are committed to making healthy changes for current and future generations,” said Kristina Deecher, of the American Dairy Association and Dairy Council, in a press release. “All of our Fuel Up to Play 60 Ambassadors have made great strides in the movement for a healthier nation.”
Kuffour, along with state and national ambassadors, helps lead the Fuel Up to Play 60 program, which engages youth directly as grassroots leaders to increase access to healthy foods and 60 minutes of physical activity at school, according to a press release.
In the coming year, Kuffour will lead the school in making healthy, sustainable changes and represent the program at local events, round table discussions, and more, according to a press release. Selected from a nationwide search and extensive application process, these ambassadors, along with national and state ambassadors, will attend the Fuel Up to Play 60 Student Ambassador Summit in Chicago this summer.
The summit provides Student Ambassadors the opportunity to meet their peers, learn leadership skills and help shape the program for the 2015-16 school year. Students also will have the chance to meet NFL players and participate in exciting events including physical activity drills and an ultimate cook-off with their peers, according to a press release.
