YONKERS, N.Y. -- Yonkers City Hall raised the rainbow flag on Monday, June 20, in solidarity with the victims of the Pulse Nightclub shooting  in Orlando in which 49 LGBT club-goers were shot and killed, according to lohud.com.

The shooting took 49 lives in the early hours of June 12 including Rockland County native Shane Tomlinson. Raising the Gay Pride flag is an annual event in Yonkers, organized by the Yonkers Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Advisory Board, according to lohud.com.

The ceremony kicked off at 5 p.m. at City Hall and also served as the opening ceremonies to gay pride week celebrations which will occur throughout the New York metropolitan area and as always leads up to New York City's Gay Pride March on Sunday.

A reception at Yonkers Brewery followed the flag raising ceremony, according to lohud.com.
