Former Yonkers Resident Calls McDonald's Free Coffee Offer 'Brilliant'

BEDFORD HILLS, N.Y. – Coffee is the future, according to one Bedford customer satisfied by the free small coffee McDonalds is offering for the next two weeks during breakfast hours.

Carlton Evans bought a large coffee at McDonalds Monday, but said he will buy the free small coffee the next chance he gets.

The deal started Monday and ends April 13. No purchase is necessary to get the free small coffee between 6 to 10:30 a.m.

John Redmond, a sales and leasing consultant at Acura of Bedford Hills, called the free small coffee promotion a brilliant idea.

“They want a piece of what goes on at Starbucks and Dunkin (Donuts)," he said. "So there’s a brilliance associated with that. How do I know the differences in coffees? If it’s hot and if it doesn’t taste bitter.”

The Greenwich, Conn., resident, formerly of Yonkers, said the coffee market could draw a lot of people, adding that he offers potential car buyers coffee.

“The first thing I say is, ‘want a cup of coffee?’” he said. “I say, ‘you want some negotiating coffee?’”

Carlton Evans said he didn’t know about the deal when he walked into the McDonalds on North Bedford Road (Route 117), and that “they’re definitely not advertising it too well.”

“I’ll try to hit them up tomorrow,” said Evans, who works for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and is stationed between the Chappaqua and Wassaic stations on the Metro-North’s Harlem line.

John Ortiz had second thoughts about walking into the same McDonald's in Bedford. But, he said he was pleasantly surprised by the free coffee.

“People are going to come in and try to get that free coffee. At the same time it’s more revenue,” he said.

When Ortiz walked in, he said he heard a McDonalds employee offer the deal to someone else.

“I said, let me try it,” he said.

Approximately 968,802 cups of coffee would given out If everyone from Westchester Country claimed a cup, according to the fast food chain, which cited U.S. Census data.
