Last week, 15 members of the Bronxville High School Habitat for Humanity Club were joined by advisors Chris Doyle and Zhanna Cabrera, where they spent part of their weekend restoring, renovating and rebuilding the two homes to help military families.
During the day, the students were responsible for much of the manual labor, carrying dirt and concrete mix around the sites and repairing various water pipes and other maladies in the home. Seniors Cononr Barrett, Emily and Sarah Conway, Maryasa Krivitskaya and Georgia McCann helped to rebuild a roof, while sophomore Kirsten Ircha was in charge of a group of students working on a wall-building project.
“I really enjoyed the physical work with Habitat for Humanity and seeing how I can help people build homes and help them rebuild their lives,” senior Dylan Weber said.
The Habitat for Humanity Club didn’t stop there. At this weekend’s football game, they hosted a fundraiser during homecoming where families could sign 2-by-4-foot pieces of wood that will be used to build additional homes moving forward.
Doyle noted that it’s important for his students to get an early start volunteering in the community to ensure that they continue working to help their neighbors in need.
“It is so important that students are willing to give up a Saturday morning to help their local community,” he said. “(They) see the difference they can make in the lives of families who live just a few minutes away from them.”
