Empire City Casino President and CEO Timothy Rooney presented more than 1,000 toys and coats to Catholic Charities Monday morning inside the Yonkers Avenue casino.
Each of the items was collected this month during Empire City’s annual “Christmas Spirit” Toy and Coat Drive, which organizers said was casino’s most successful collection drive to date.
“The Empire City Casino Toy and Coat Drive will benefit many of our clients and relieve them of a financial burden this Christmas season,” Karen Reynolds, of Westchester and Putnam Catholic Charities, said in a statement.
Surrounded by a sampling of the donated toys, several city and county officials were on hand for the morning ceremony inside the casino’s Entertainment Lounge.
There, Rooney thanked Jams, a family-owned California-based company, for donating hundreds of new toys for children in New York, as well as the Yonkers-based Smart Move & Storage for providing storage for all of the items donated.
“There are no greater deeds than charity and service,” he said.
In addition, Rooney also presented Catholic Charities with a $500,000 donation Monday to help with Hurricane Sandy Relief efforts. The money will be directed to New Yorkers recovering in New York City, as well as Westchester, the casino said.
