“Our first of hopefully many film festivals is only months away,” said Mayor Spano in announcing the event last week. “I encourage filmmakers of all types to enter YoFi Fest so that Yonkers will shine as a center for innovative, creative and aspirational film."

In addition to the usual feature-length or short films, there will be a special category for student work of any length. Submissions can be made at the festival website, YoFiFest.com.

The Yonkers Film Festival will present feature films, short films, documentaries, animation, music videos and student work from emerging artists.

"We’ve had a lot of interest from filmmakers already," said David Steck, from Numeric Pictures, which is working with the city to hold the festival. "We’re very optimistic that we’re to get some really great films that audiences are going to enjoy.”

The festival will also host lectures, panel discussion, receptions and parties where attendees will have the opportunity to interact with film industry professionals.

The submission period is open through August, with the selected films to be announced in September.

Film-friendly audiences are expected to be drawn from Yonkers, New York City, Westchester County, the Hudson Valley and the tri-state area.

“Westchester County has a thriving film industry which is experiencing a 60% increase over last year,” said County Executive Robert P. Astorino. “Film Festivals are a wonderful way to encourage new artists and new ideas. We are very pleased to welcome this festival.”

The YoFi Festival is presented through a partnership with the City of Yonkers, Blue Door Arts Center, The Yonkers Film Office, Sound Associates and Numeric Pictures.
