NF, or neurofibromatosis, is a genetic disorder that causes tumors to grow on nerves throughout the body and affects one in 3,000 people. There is no cure for the disorder.

Shine a Light is a grass-roots initiative to bring NF awareness into the community. The initiative is one aspect of the Children's Tumor Foundation's monthlong awareness campaign.

The theme for this year's NF Awareness Month is "I Know a Fighter." Blue and green are the official colors of neurofibromatosis.

The clocktower joins other New York landmarks such as Niagara Falls, the Peace Bridge and the Mid-Hudson bridge in showing support for NF awareness.
