YONKERS, N.Y. -- Whether you like them frosted, powdered, jelly-filled or plain, having a fresh doughnut to go with your morning coffee is so good, they made a day for it.
National Doughnut Day, which is being celebrated on Friday, is a holiday sprinkled with history. It is held the first Friday of June each year, in memory the Doughnut Day event created by The Salvation Army in 1938 to honor the men and women who served doughnuts to soldiers during World War I.
In some cities across the U.S., National Doughnut Day is still a fundraiser for The Salvation Army to this day. Along with its own history, it fell on the 70th anniversary of World War II's D-Day this year.
Peter Marrinan of Yonkers knows a thing or two about a quality doughnut. He is the President and CEO of TBG Food Acquisition Corp, which owns 30 Dunkin Donuts locations across Westchester County.
For the special day, his stores threw in a free doughnut with every beverage purchase, distributing a whopping 50,000 of the delicious treats. On an average Friday, they usually sell approximately 20,000.
"It was definitely a great day to be in the doughnut business and give back to all our loyal customers," he said. "It’s nice to see them smiling with powdered sugar on their faces."
In celebration of the holiday, Yonkers resident Yousef Fakhoury weighed in on his favorite kind of doughnut, the Boston Creme - a chocolate-frosted doughnut filled with vanilla cream custard.
Additionally, locals flocked to one of Yonkers' largest markets, Stew Leonard's, who offered free samples of their famous Apple Cider Donut holes all day, along with discounts on boxes.
