Westchester Pubs Prepare For St. Patrick's Day Festivities

WESTCHESTER, N.Y. -- It's not easy being green, but in Westchester's many pubs on St. Patrick's Day, it can be a whole lot of fun.

Known more affectionately as "St. Paddy's," the Christian feast day is celebrated on March 17 and falls on a Monday this year. St. Patrick is most popularly known as the patron saint of Ireland.

The holiday is a heavily celebrated one in the United States, and local pubs will be filled with revelers dressed in green from head-to-toe looking for the "Irish" experience.

Many of Westchester's pubs have already begun preparing for a long day and even longer night of celebrations.

Molly Spillane's in Mamaroneck is currently taking reservations for its party, which will include drink specials and an authentic Irish menu, featuring standard classics like corned beef and cabbage.

According to marketing manager Kate Boyd, patrons will also enjoy an all-day performance by Irish DJ Frankie Kennedy, along with bagpipers and Irish step dancers.

Up North at Peekskill's Quiet Man Public House, the holiday will get an early kickoff with a "kegs and eggs" breakfast - which is exactly what it sounds like - from 7 a.m. until noon.

After that, head chef Mario Capparelli's prix-fixe holiday menu will include shepherd's pie, bangers and mash, and other specials. He'll also be ordering "a lot of Guinness." Tim Murphy will be playing classic Irish folk songs at 8 p.m.

According to Capparelli, he expects the restaurant to be very crowded. However, it is walk-ins only unless you're bringing a party of 10 or more.

Burke's Restaurant in Yonkers will be holding a fundraiser on the night of March 14 from 8 to 10 p.m. for the Aishling Irish Center. It will be having live Irish music on March 15, brunch on March 16, and St. Patrick's Day will feature its traditional all-day corned beef and cabbage special.

O'Connor's Public House in Mount Kisco will be offering a similar special Irish menu on March 8 during and after the local St. Patrick's Day parade. It will also be holding a similar celebration on the holiday itself.

Owner Sean O'Connor said, "It's going to be a party atmosphere all day into the early morning. We'll be serving plenty pitchers of beer. Every year I work with someone different. This year it's Corona and Magner's Cider."

He added that, on both days, there will be bagpipe performances, along with giveaways and drink specials.
