YONKERS, N.Y. – The new year is upon us, Yonkers, and that means a fresh start.
Nearly half of all Americans will ring in 2013 by pledging to improve their lives with a New Year’s resolution. For some, this year will be a time when they advance their education. For others, it will be a year of self-control and fiscal responsibility.
At the Cross County Shopping Center on Monday, many Yonkers residents said they, too, had plans for 2013.
Pace University student Jennifer Zabor said her resolution was to be a better “me.”
“I want to be a better daughter, girlfriend, student, and be the best person I can be,” she said.
Erik Treutler, 25, said he wants to go back to school to get a master’s degree.
“I’ve been putting it off for a while now,” he said. “I keep saying I’m going to head back, but this is the year I am going to make that happen.”
Yonkers mom Ashley Lowing said her plan was to spend more time hitting the snooze button.
“I'd say my New Year's resolution is to get more sleep,” she said. “I’ve been going on four or five hours of sleep each day, and I know I need more.”
Studies show that millions of Americans make New Year’s resolutions. But sticking to them isn’t easy. Only 8 percent say they are regularly successful, a study by the University of Scranton found.
That is something Frank Vitale of Yonkers said he knows all too well.
“I don’t really make resolutions anymore,” he said. “I never seemed to follow through with them.”
For those who haven’t lost hope in the power of the resolution, Health magazine has some ideas for quick-and-easy resolutions – from fixing your posture to laughing more.
Experts say it’s all about persistence. Those who succeed don’t expect change overnight and are better prepared for what’s in store, health and fitness blogger Eileen Marable says.
“They know a resolution is not some magic incantation that produces automatic behavioral change, but is a process of change that lasts a lifetime,” she wrote on the blog calorieking.com .
