New York Ranks As Second Worst State To Retire, Study Finds

WESTCHESTER COUNTY, N.Y. -- New York was recently ranked as the second-worst state to retire in, according to Bankrate.

Bankrate compiled information from all 50 states in several key categories:

  • Cost of living
  • Crime rate
  • Health care quality
  • State and local tax burden
  • Personal well-being
  • Weather

The Empire State struggled mightily in several of the metrics, ranking dead last in in tax burden, 47th in cost of living and 42nd in personal well-being. New York's highest rating was in crime, where it ranked 17th. 

Neighboring Connecticut fared only slightly better, ranking 39th overall.

The top state to retire in is Wyoming, which boasts the best tax rate in the nation as well as a top five crime rate. 

The worst state for retirement is Arkansas.
