Stewart, a longtime Bedford resident, wrote about her recent visit to the estate on her blog “Martha Up Close & Personal,” which included more than 30 beautiful photos of Untermyer Gardens taken by Stewart herself.

“I love visiting gardens around the country and the world,” said Stewart, the 73-year-old founder of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, in her Sept. 23 post. “Last week I saw a very beautiful one close to home, Untermyer Gardens in Yonkers, New York.”

Prominent New York City Lawyer Samuel J. Untermyer bought the Greystone property in an auction for the estate of former New York State governor and failed presidential candidate Samuel J. Tilden in 1899.

Almost 15 years later, Untermyer, who had a passion for horticulture, aimed to build the formal gardens on the Greystone estate into a 150-acres of “the greatest gardens in the world,” according to the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy’s website.

“He transformed Greystone’s gardens into some of the most celebrated in America,” Stewart blogs.

Stephen Byrns who is the chairman of the Board of Directors for the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy, a non-profit organization that is working to restore the gardens, gave Stewart a two-hour tour of the grounds on Sept. 15. Byrns was even featured in a photo Stewart took for her blog.

“She was smart, well-prepared and charming,” Byrns told Daily Voice. “She was bowled over by the magnificence and history of the gardens.”

The tour was orchestrated by Barbara Israel, a board member of the Untermyer Gardens Conservancy and friend of Stewart’s. During the tour, a videographer, photographer, sound person and various producers and writers accompanied Stewart. According to Byrns, Stewart expressed her desire to feature the Yonkers gem on her TV show and magazine, as well as her blog.

“I hope you enjoy the photos I took of this stunning place and I encourage you to visit if you can,” writes Stewart.
