The fish counter at each of the Stew Leonard’s stores is outfitted with a fake monkfish.
Laid across the ice alongside freshly caught snapper, salmon and more, there’s no reason for shoppers to think that this monkfish is any different.
Monkfish – also called sea devils – are best known for their huge heads and long, pointed teeth as well as for their white, meaty flesh that’s comparable to lobster. However, a chain is attached the rear fin of the monkfish, which is hidden under ice, and the chain can be pulled to make the fish “come alive.”
Each Stew Leonard’s fake monkfish is made of silicone and measures 24 inches by 36 inches. The original sculpture of the monkfish was created by Stew Leonard’s in-house graphic designer, Emizael Moura, crafted by Stew’s in-house Animatronics Specialist Scott Pokorak, and then hand-painted by Emizael to create a slimy fish-like sheen.
