Comedian Judy Gold Entertains At Mamaroneck's Emelin Theater Friday

MAMARONECK, N.Y. -- If you love to laugh about food, being Jewish, being a lesbian, having a controlling mother, bringing your kids on a Cape Cod vacation -- or a combination of all these scenarios -- Friday night's comedy show at the Emelin Theatre is a must.

Judy Gold, an Emmy-award winning actress and comedian, considers the late Joan Rivers a mentor. In fact, Gold hung out with Rivers on July 5, between shows at the Town Hall in Provincetown, Mass.

In an interview with Daily Voice, Gold said Rivers "died at the top of her game,'' while using a few curse words to decry the fact former Vice President Dick Cheney is still walking around after a heart transplant at the age of 71.

Gold gets much of her material raising two teenage sons and from her domineering 92-year-old mother. Also, living in New York City with her girlfriend, Elysa, a therapist, provides her with another dimension of comedy material.

At the age of 13, Gold was 6-foot tall, so having a sense of humor helped her deflect teasing as she towered over her peers. "I tried out for basketball. The coach said I was "too tall and it wouldn't be fair to the rest of the team, which is so... stupid."

Inequality persists: Whenever she walks down the street with her 13-year-old son Ben -- who is 6-foot tall and wears size 14 shoes -- "it's such a different experience for him. People say, 'How old is he? I can't believe it. He's so tall. Well, thank God he's a boy.'''

Her 18-year-old son, Henry, is studying business at Indiana University; the last career he'd ever pursue is comedy, she says.

Gold has co-hosted "The View,'' and appeared on HBO, Comedy Central and in two of her own Off-Broadway hits. She makes regular appearances on television shows, but said she is looking forward to her stand-up routine in Mamaroneck. "I love the Emelin,'' she said of the theatre at 153 Library Lane. "I work there all the time."
