Colon Care: Surgeon Explains When Treatment Is Needed

SLEEPY HOLLOW, N.Y. -- The colon, or large intestine, plays an important role in food digestion. The end of the digestive track, the organ is especially sensitive to a variety of diseases. However, the team at Hudson Valley Surgical Group make sure to treat the belly of the beast carefully and efficiently to get patients back on their feet in a heartbeat.

Dr. Lau of Hudson Valley Surgical Group explains how minimally invasive surgery is the best option for colon treatment.

Located in the abdomen, the colon removes water, salt and nutrients from the stomach, keeping the digestive track running smoothly. Muscles and billions of bacteria coat the colon's fleshy walls, living in a healthy balance with the body. "While the colon is very important in flushing things out of our bodies, it can also lead to a multitude of conditions that can be serious," said Dr. Har Chi Lau, of Hudson Valley Surgical Group, Minimally Invasive Center in Sleepy Hollow.

Some colon conditions include Chron's disease, diverticular disease and in extreme cases, colon cancer. When colon surgery is required, Hudson Valley Surgical Group surgeons perform laparoscopic surgery in the affected area. "Diseases of the colon usually require open surgery with a large incision, resulting in a difficult, long and painful recovery time for patients," said Lau. "However, we take a full evaluation and risk-assessment catered to each patient. The evaluation will also include genetic tests to identify high-risks issues and will help determine a custom approach to each patient."

Once the surgery is performed, HVSG's advanced technique of Robotic or Laparoscopic procedures, involves a series of four to five small incisions, instead of one large incision to perform the colon surgery. This powerful new technology, which utilizes video instruments to view the colon, enables surgeons to complete the surgery faster and more precisely than ever before.

To avoid colon surgery altogether, Lau suggests leading a healthier lifestyle. "Eating fruits, vegetables and whole grains, which contain vitamins, minerals, fiber and antioxidants play a role in cancer prevention," said Lau. "It's also smart to moderate alcohol consumption and smoking."
