Elected officials from throughout the state attended the commencement at Greyston’s offices at 21 Park Ave., Yonkers, to congratulate the graduates of the program that has provided training and job placement for low-income and under-employed individuals of Southwest Yonkers since 1982.
“This graduation celebrates the completion of the program by a hard-working and deserving class of individuals and acknowledgement of those individuals who have successfully retained employment,” said Greyston President and CEO Mike Brady in a statement.
Greyston serves more than 5,000 people every year, providing the personal and professional tools required to obtain and retain employment. One of those endeavors is the Greyston Bakery, opened 30 years ago and is the primary supplier of brownies for Ben and Jerry's Ice Cream.
Through support from the Yonkers Workforce Investment Board and the New York State Supportive Housing Program and other private funders, Greyston is able to provide curriculum such as culinary arts, certified nursing aide and home health aide, building maintenance, security guard, office aide, customer service, and phlebotomy and EKG.
“What started as a place of employment for the homeless and jobless has grown into a diverse group of programs that serve the multi-faceted needs of the Yonkers community,” said Brady in a statement. “With this program, Greyston is able to answer the call from a population that needs us.”
