Darien Residents Learn Value of Tweeting

DARIEN, Conn. — Aspiring writers and bloggers had an opportunity to learn the ins and outs of staying in touch with friends, family and the community by blogging and tweeting at the Darien Library on Feb. 15. The program, "Tech Moms: A Panel Discussion for Parents," was one of a series entitled "Cyber Parents & Digital Natives" offered by the Darien's Children Library.

Panelists included Nicole Lyons, who blogs on All About Darien; Jacquie Miller, who blogs on AfterWords; and Jennifer St. Jean, owner of The Itty Bitty Bag Company and an Etsy store owner. Lisa Adams was the moderator.

The speakers discussed the value of Twitter as a vehicle for reaching a large community. Adams described her battle with Connecticut Light & Power over a tree that leaned dangerously over wires next to the school bus stop. After numerous failed attempts to reach the utility company, she sent a tweet with a photo of the tree. "CL&P doesn't think this is dangerous. What do you think?" was sent to her 3,000 followers, with a copy to CL&P.

"CL&P was at my house within a few hours," Adams says.

St. Jean, whose family suffers from food allergies, finds Twitter useful for sharing recipes and providing advice about restaurants.

Miller and Lyons use Twitter to find out what's going on in the community. "It's a real-time information stream," Lyons says.

Future programs for parents and/or children include Family Gaming Sandbox on Feb. 24, and an Etsy Workshop on March 6. For more information, contact the Darien Library.
