YONKERS, N.Y. – Irish revelers are counting down the days until the waves of green ride into Yonkers for next month’s St. Patrick’s Day festivities.
The 58th Annual Official Yonkers Saint Patrick’s Day Parade will step off Sunday, March 3, at 1:30 p.m. on Valentine Lane in south Yonkers.
The line-up of local bands, schools and marching units, led by Yonkers native and Grand Marshal William Harrington, will head up Broadway to the reviewing stand in front of St. John’s Church in Getty Square.
Harrington and his eight aides will be honored at 8 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 23, at The Changing of the Sash and Parade Dinner Dance in the Good Time Room at the Empire City Casino at Yonkers Raceway. There, 2012 Grand Marshal Peter X. Kelly will transfer the sash to Harrington, a Pound Ridge lawyer who serves as chairman of Westchester County Association. Harrington’s aides for the parade include Michael Bennett, Eileen Collum, Kathleen Ennis, Joseph Hallinan, Thomas Meier, Kenneth O’Brien, Ronan O’Brien and Mary Teague.
On March 23, the party will continue with the second annual McLean Avenue St. Patrick’s Day Parade.
Happy-go-lucky parade goers will celebrate the patron saint of Ireland as the march kicks off at 1 p.m. on Bronx River Road, near the Yonkers and Woodlawn line.
Yonkers resident Joanie Madden, a leader of Cherish the Ladies and acclaimed flute player, will be the Grand Marshal, leading marchers up McLean Avenue to Coyne Park.
The heavily Irish neighborhood is looking to build upon the success of last year when it celebrated with its first-ever parade, drawing thousands of revelers.
Organizers say the parade has confirmed dozens of marchers this year from New York City, Westchester and Rockland counties, including NYC Transit Pipes & Drums, Rockland County AOH Pipe Band and The Kerry Pipers.
The festivities also will include face painting for children and a showcase of classic cars.
Mass will be held in the chapel at St. Barnabas High School at 10 a.m. the day of the parade, followed by a breakfast with a suggested $5 donation.
