Senator, Local Groups Set Earth Day Celebration At Yonkers Garden

YONKERS, N.Y. -- Folks who are willing to dress to get dirty can come learn the basics of community gardening at an Earth Day celebration in Yonkers this week.

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, is partnering with several organizations to celebrate Earth Day this year. A program at a community garden in Yonkers is planned for Wednesday, April 20.

State Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins is partnering with local groups to promote the garden located at 94 Woodworth Ave.

Local gardening experts will be on hand from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday, April 20, to answer questions and to drum up volunteers for future growing endeavours.

There will be free classes on nutrition and a talk on the basics of planting and harvesting, Stewart-Cousins said.

Refreshments will also be served.

Organizations participating in the event include: Food Bank of Westchester; Greyston, a nonprofit bakery that offers employments opportunities; Groundwork of Hudson, which organizes environmental projects in struggling communities; and Sarah Lawrence College.

Land for the garden was donated by Max Braun & Sons, a longtime local processer of meats and produce.

The garden is located behind the Max Braun & Sons building.
