Several Fairfield residents helped the Wilton Y Wahoos clinch their 25th consecutive Connecticut YMCA State Swimming Championship title. The Wilton Y Wahoos have won the Y state championship title every year since 1987. The team scored an impressive 4,837 points overall this year, and the Greenwich YWCA was second with 2,643 overall team points in the recent meet.
Seven-year-old Tyler Sicignano of Fairfield placed first in the 25 free as well as third in the 25 fly and the 100 IM in the 8-and-under category. Amelia Sicignano took home the gold in the 10-and-under girls 100 freestyle and touched second in the 100 individual medley and the 100 fly.
In the 11-12 age group, Fairfield's Ella Cowan de Wolf touched second in the 200 freestyle, fourth in the 100 freestyle and fifth in the 100 backstroke. Teammate Jesmond Bollman also rose to the championship occasion, putting up personal bests in the 50 free and 100 backstroke.
Swimming in the 13-14 age group, Fairfield's Brianna West and Sapir Shoshan put in strong performances for the Wahoos in several events, with Shoshan posting a personal best in the 200 breaststroke. Mary Gnibus achieved personal bests in the 500 free and 200 free.
In the 15-18 age group, Claire Bollman swam fast for the Wahoos, chalking up best-ever times in the 100 back and 100 butterfly. Fellow Fairfield resident Caitlyn West also had impressive performances as part of the title-winning effort.
