Opponents Of U.S. Coast Guard's Anchorage Plan To Hold Event In Garrison

GARRISON, N.Y. – The Philipstown Democrats will be holding an event this month to voice their disagreement with a U.S. Coast Guard proposal that would establish new anchorage grounds for barges in the Hudson River, according to group organizers.

The Parking Lot-On-Hudson event is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. on Nov. 16 at St. Philip’s Church, according to organizers.

Scheduled speakers include Paul Gallay, president of Hudson Riverkeeper, Jason Baker, a representative of Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano, and Erin Doran, a staff attorney with Riverkeeper.

The free event is open to the public, according to organizers.

The Philipstown Democrats have been vocal opponents of the Coast Guard’s plan, which would provide anchorage for ships as long as 600 feet between Yonkers and Kingston, according to organizers.

In total, the plan calls for the creation of 10 new anchorage sites with more than 40 births, or “parking spot" in the river, according to the Democrats, who said that a “potential accident or spill of the oil” carried by the barges could be environmentally disastrous.

The Parking Lot-On-Hudson event is to take place at the church, 1101 Route 9D, Garrison, at 7 p.m. Doors are to open at 6:30 p.m.
