An appellate court on Thursday suspended Jose Izquierdo’s law and architectural license for two years for lying to the FBI about the payment.
However, records show that state authorities are willing to return his license to him if he completes an ethics course.
Izguiero, 54, who came to the United States from Cuba as a child and lives in Cliffside Park, has a chance to do something most convicted lawyers don’t — stay in business. He also has been sentenced to probation and fined $25,000.
Now he just has to steer clear of corrupt influences — which, in Hudson County, is punishment itself.
Beats a disbarment, his lawyer told AmericanLawyer.com.
“It is interesting in the sense that most lawyers convicted of a federal felony in New Jersey and New York may well likely be disbarred,” defense attorney Eric R. Breslin said.
His client was merely playing by rules that had been established a long time ago, Breslin told AmericanLawyer.com. “This is the sad fact of life in this state,” the attorney said.
