Andres van der Poll, 80, Stamford Civil Engineer

STAMFORD, Conn. – Andres van der Poll of Stamford died June 15. He was 80. 

He was the son of Andries van der Poll and Raquel Eloisa Scala. Born and raised in Buenos Aires, Argentina, van der Poll graduated from the University of Buenos Aires with a degree in civil engineering. 

In 1959, he and his family immigrated to the United States, settling in New York. In 1971, van der Poll moved to Stamford. A year later, he formed McDonald & van der Poll, a structural engineering firm, with his good friend and business partner, the late Alex McDonald.  

The firm provided engineering services for many of the large buildings in downtown Stamford, including the Landmark Square complex, office buildings and hotels along Tresser Boulevard, the Stamford Center for the Arts, Stamford Superior Court, Stamford Landing complex, Stamford Town Center and High Ridge Office Park. 

Van der Poll was a fellow of the American Society of Civil Engineers and a member of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. In the 1970s, he was a member of the Stamford Exchange Club. From 1995, van der Poll was a member of the Stamford Sunrise Rotary Club and the Greenwich Rotary Club. 

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Josefina Susana Corradi van der Poll; a daughter, Susana van der Poll and her husband, Bernd Echtermeyer, of Dortmund, Germany; a son, Andrew (Elaine) van der Poll, of Virginia Beach, Va.; a sister, Raquel van der Poll Pope, of Thomasville, Ga.; two granddaughters and many nieces and nephews.  

As per his request, there is no viewing or service. Leo P. Gallagher and Son Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
