Hen Hud Introduces Roof Repair Bond Referendum

MONTROSE, N.Y. – Hendrick Hudson School District’s second bond referendum of the 2011-2012 school year will appear on the May 15 ballot, requesting voters approved $717,000 worth of roof repairs and bus replacements.

“They’re in pretty bad shape, they leak profusely and it’s been an ongoing issue for a while,” said spokesperson Rick McCormack about roofs at Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary and the gym of Hendrick Hudson High School.

The newest referendum is split into two proposals, one for $500,000 for roof repairs in Buchanan-Verplanck Elementary and the Hendrick Hudson High School gym. The second other referendum is for four vehicles worth $217,000, including one wheelchair accessible van, two dual rear wheel vans and one Suburban SUV.

As part of the plan, a line item on the ballot will ask that voters allow the district to return $666,391 to taxpayers, before borrowing money for repairs. District officials expect roof repairs to cost Town of Cortlandt homeowners $1.23 per $1,000 of assessed value, meaning a house with a market value of $440,000, assessed at $7,700, would pay an additional $9.47 per year.

For houses in Peekskill, roof repairs would cost taxpayers 62 cents per year, or an additional $4.77 per year for a home with a market value of $207,000, an assessed value of $7,700.

The roof repairs were originally part of the district’s $25.1 million “Implementing the Vision” strategic plan, which was turned down in December 2011. The “Implementing the Vision” bond would have constructed a performing arts center and installed synthetic turf athletic fields, along with several other upgrades and repairs.

After the 2-to-1 failure of the bond, the district surveyed the public to determine what kinds of repairs would be politically feasible. Roof repairs, septic repairs and technology networks had the broadest support, with 80 percent of those surveyed, according to survey results published by the district.

The Hendrick Hudson School District budget vote will take place May 15, from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Frank G. Lindsey Elementary School gym.
