Somers Girls Soccer's Run Ends in State Final

SOMERS, N.Y. - The Somers High School varsity girls soccer team played an outstanding game on Sunday, Nov. 20, in the program's first State championship game appearance.

The opponent was the powerful South Side High School team from Rockville Centre, winners of 15 NYS championships over the last 26 years. South Side prevailed 1-0 in four overtimes in a game played at Homer High School.

Somers played brilliant soccer from the opening moments, connecting six and seven passes at a time, while outworking the other team to create many scoring opportunities.

Despite terrific effort from the forwards and middies, the shots on goal were all "unluckies," as Somers could not find the "back of the onion bag."

Somers was tested defensively and convincingly responded by winning most of the 50-50 balls in the midfield, making hard tackles in the back, while the keeper came up with another huge game, making countless big saves.

With less then a minute to go in the fourth overtime, a South Side player was able to head a loose ball in the top of the box into our goal, ending the most successful season in SHS girls varsity soccer history.

Somers had defeated Burnt Hills 1-0 in the semifinals to advance to the title game.

Good luck to the talented and dedicated seniors who can surely play and succeed in college soccer next year, while the rest of the team will return, with some new players ready to earn another shot at the State Championship.

Congratulations to the coaches, players and the many students, fans and parents who support the soccer program. Somers won the 2011 Sportsmanship Award, and earned the titles of league champions and Section 1 champions, Regional champions and finalists in the NYS High School Tournament.
