STAMFORD, Conn. It would have been reasonable to expect a bit of a letdown this week from Stamford High quarterback Bryan Boderick after the Black Knights beat New Canaan for the first time since 1977 last Saturday. It turns out the Stamford senior was just getting warmed up.
Boderick was 22 of 34, passing for 300 yards and a pair of touchdowns to his twin brother, Barry, Saturday night against Brien McMahon. Bryan also ran for a one-yard TD in a thrilling 28-20 victory over the Senators.
They expected us to run, but Bryan is a double-threat. He takes his chances, but he threw the ball very well, Stamford head coach Bryan Hocter said. There were a couple times that things could have run away from us, but we remained poised. We were relaxed and confident.
Boderick was most effective in high-pressure situations, converting on third or fourth down nine times to keep Stamford drives alive. Stamford had to punt only once thanks to Bodericks ability in the clutch.
No third-down play was bigger than the one Boderick cashed in on with just over a minute to play. Backed up to his own 16-yard line, Boderick sizzled a pass over the middle to Jake Demetros for 20 yards to ice the game for the Black Knights.
We played our hearts out and came out with the victory, Boderick said. Their defense was playing off our receivers a bit, so I just kept hitting them to keep driving.
It was an emotional game for both sides, each team being hit with two unsportsmanlike conduct penalties and two other personal foul penalties. McMahon fought back with drives of 51 and 77 yards late in the fourth quarter to cut the Stamford lead to eight. The Black Knights offense turned out to be its best defense, burning the clock.
Demetros had a breakout night for Stamford, catching nine passes for 147 yards, including the game-ending 20-yarder. Barry Boderick had nine catches for 77 yards and two touchdowns. Chandler Foster added 50 yards receiving on four catches and a six-yard touchdown run.
Stamford (6-2) has now won five straight games and has a chance to finish with its best record since 1995. The Black Knights take on winless Westhill on Thanksgiving at 10 a.m. The Black Knights still have a very slim chance of making the Class LL state tournament, but need a lot of other teams to lose on Thanksgiving for that to become a reality.
