New Canaan 3 Red Conquers Rain and Darien

NEW CANAAN, Conn --Those fans who braved the rainy weather and early start were rewarded with a satisfying New Canaan 3rd Grade Red 8-0 victory at Darien High School.

The tone was set early with a 15-yard QB keeper up the middle by Chris Canet on the first play from scrimmage, with key blocks from Aidan Blair and Ben Marshall. The drive continued with inside and outside runs by Hayden Shin and Tommy Towers, and was capped by a 30-yard touchdown bootleg run by Canet, which fooled nearly everyone on the Darien defense. The Rams earned the 2-point conversion on a wingback misdirection run by Towers

The NC defense was the story of the day, however, by confidently securing the first of several “three-and-outs” on Darien’s first possession, with stops by Nicholas Radman and Griffin Koch. The Rams offense ended the 1st quarter with carries of 17 and 10 yards by Canet and Towers, with holes created by the sturdy front line, led by Jack Murphy, Aidan Blair, Will Thomas, Dylan Kortman, and Bryce Harrell.

New Canaan’s defense continued to stifle the Blue Wave, not allowing a first down until well into the second quarter. Strong tackling by Henry Cannon, Mac MacHale, Johnny Dunn, Jackson LaMorte, and Charlie Borthwick kept Darien bottled up.

With the clock in the Rams’ favor, the offense continued to grind well into Darien territory throughout the second half, with punishing runs by Shin, who seemed to require 3-4 players to bring him down each carry. Only a couple of offensive penalties prevented the Rams from adding to their lead early in the fth ouquarter. With about 5 minutes remaining, the Blue Wave tried to jump start their offense in an attempt to tie the score, but the Ram defense was too overpowering. Darien tossed a pass on 4th and 17, but it was almost intercepted by Borthwick.

The NC 3rd Grade Red Rams are now 2-2, and will face the Wilton Bantam 3 White  Saturday in Wilton.
