How much money are you spending on use-once dusters and mops, such as Swiffers? Sure, they're convenient and do a great job picking up dust and animal hair, but if you're in penny-pinching mode, there's a free (and totally green) option.
My favorite cleaning rag is an old sock. I keep a collection of mate-less socks in a drawer. Any sock will do, provided you can get your hand into it. Don't throw away kids' socks. They're just as efficient as their larger brethren.
Socks made from synthetic fabric work best for dusting. Knee-high socks will make the job go faster. Simply slide the sock on your hand and run it along dusty surfaces. If you like to use polish, spritz some on the sock and shine away.
Any old sock works for cleaning jobs. Wet the sock, wring dry, put it on and wipe those awkward spots that are easy to miss, such as the trim around windows and baseboards. A damp sock is the easiest way to clean the stairs, especially around the balusters. Try the damp sock trick on your car dashboard. If you're dealing with a really dirty job, use a detergent-soaked sock on one hand and wipe down with a damp sock on the other.
