New Canaan Puts Traditions on Tap for Memorial Day

Charlotte Colson is not sweating any lack of Memorial Day plans. She happy when working up a good sweat and feeling the burn while taking a walk.

“I like to walk, and this vacation gives me time to do it,” Colson said as she took strides along South Avenue on Friday evening, capping a long week of work as a legal assistant at the firm of Piazza, Simmons and Grant in Stamford. “That relaxes me after a long week working.”

While many New Canaanites have their plans set for the day off Monday, Colson plans to do a little more walking and plenty of relaxing unless she visits her grandchildren on Long Island. She used to take her children to the New Canaan Memorial Day Parade when they were young. Now she’ll wait to decide whether to visit the grandkids or accept an invite to a house barbecue.

“I just go with the flow,” she said.

Fellow walker Pam Shilling of Hawthorne Lane will take in the parade with her husband and kids, something she has done for years. “It has such a nice hometown feel,” she said of the parade, which will start at 9:30 a.m. Monday. “There’s the fire trucks, and it gets everyone happy. We have a good time.” Later in the day, she and the family will fire up the grill and enjoy some classic summertime food.

Sue Friborg, a teacher at New Canaan Country School, expects to do grilling, too, to break in the summer season. However, Friborg will enjoy the outdoors in Kennebunkport, Maine, where she and her family have gathered for summer get-togethers for years. “We’re going for the beach and barbecue,” she said, no doubt keeping up with her beloved Boston Red Sox the whole time.
