The event will be in the Yonkers Riverfront Library Event Space and Auditorium.

Community members are invited to kick off spring planting season and learn about the importance of seeds. Bring seeds and engage in conversations about planting.

“Community engagement and empowerment remain at the core of everything we do at Greyston. Seeds of the Future exemplifies those ideals. We are looking forward to an enriching afternoon with community members,” said Mike Brady, chief executive officer of Greyston.

Greyston runs eight community gardens in Yonkers, which provide more than 382 garden beds to hundreds of local community residents. Last year, families grew more than 23,400 pounds of produce. Greyston’s healthy eating initiatives ground the community in sustainable eating practices and foster a holistic view of the environment. Seeds of the Future encourages community involvement in these initiatives and allows local green thumbs to share their wisdom.

“The experience of planting seeds and watching them grow provides a wonderful opportunity to understand the cycle of life, the impact of environmental factors and the nutritional and esthetic value plants provide as they mature. Yonkers Public Library has a wealth of informational resources to build on the experiences gained at Seeds of the Future. We’re thrilled to be part of this great event,” said Susan Thaler, acting deputy director of Yonkers Public Library.

Participants will have the chance to learn the role that seeds play in a balanced diet from Fernanda Almeida, retail registered dietitian from ShopRite of Greenway Plaza; meet the Greyston Garden Enviro-Earth Club and watch a short environmental play they have created to raise awareness; create terrariums; watch short films about seeds, the earth and plants; delve into community issues and plant the seeds of change with representatives from various community organizations including Roots and Wings, Affinity Health, Fidelis Care, Stop & Shake, Touchstone Health, The Science Barge, YMCA, Lower Hudson Valley Perinatal Network; and meet Sadie, therapy cat from Pawsitive Touch, to learn about the relationship between seeds and animals.

There also will be a chance to check out books from the gardening and seed display at the library
