HARRISON, N.Y. - A truck drove through low-hanging power lines on Nelson Avenue near Webster Avenue Friday, causing a transformer to blow and cutting power on the street.
Kyle Wasilesky was riding his bike down the road when he started hearing popping sounds.
"I thought, 'someone must be lighting fire crackers,'" Wasilesky said. "It was crazy."
Electrical wires were left hanging lower than usually after Tropical Storm Irene and were never restored, according to resident Karen Kimerling. She said she called police to warn them of the low-hanging wires at around 4:30 p.m., about 30 minutes before the incident.
"The truck came through here driving pretty fast and ripped the wires," Kimerling said. "Everything started sparkling."
The unidentified driver fled the scene before police arrived.
"It's not his fault," Kimerling said.
Officials said power should be restored Friday.
Consolidated Edison arrived at the scene within 20 minutes of incident. The Harrison police and fire departments responded to the call.
