Connecticut Boat Club Crowns National Champions

Connecticut Boat Club crowned one champion and took home a bronze medal Sunday at the U.S. Youth Nationals in Oak Ridge, Tenn. CBC is based in Norwalk and includes rowers from many Fairfield County communities.

Southport sisters Lucy and Rosie Grinalds won the Women's Youth 2- A final in 8:02.15. They finished seconds over runner-up Saratoga.

CBC's Varsity 8+, which brought a two-year winning streak into nationals, settled for a bronze medal. The crew consisted of Rosie Grinalds, Lucy Grinalds, Deirdre Fitzpatrick, Christine Bragg, Maddie Stearns, Abby Stevenson, India Knight, Heather Oudheusden and Katherine Isaza. Marin of California won the final in 6:48.17, followed by James Madison in 6:50.85. CBC took third in 6:51.05.

CBC defeated Marin two times in the trials before the California crew came back to win in the finals. "We're bummed," Coach Liz Trond said on the USRowing website. "But we had a great race, so we're bummed that we weren't the fastest crew today."

CBC sent two other crews to Tennessee. The Women's Youth 4+ team of Abbie Frey, Emily Crump, Caroline Cochran, Alex Enzor and Alissa Hornung finished second in the B Final and eighth in the country. They finished in 7:47.86, three seconds behind Wayland Weston in the B Final.

In the Women's Youth 4X B final, CBC finished third with Maria Lycouris, Meg Galloway, Victoria Babchak and Lexie Lynn. They finished ninth in the country.
